Snow up north, flood down south

I can already tell that this will be an exciting weekend for us. We are leaving in 5 hours and we still don’t know where we are going to be camping this weekend. Well, at least we know where we’re going to be riding. Well, maybe, read on!

It looks like we’re going to get lucky and we’ll be far away from Chicago when the snow is supposed to start. The weather website is saying….

...WINTER STORM WATCH NOW IN EFFECT FROM LATE TONIGHT THROUGH LATE FRIDAY NIGHT...

THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR STORM TOTAL SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS OF 5 TO 7 INCHES OVER MUCH OF THE WATCH AREA.

A WINTER STORM WATCH MEANS THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT SNOW... SLEET...OR ICE ACCUMULATIONS THAT MAY IMPACT TRAVEL. CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE LATEST FORECASTS.

5-7 inches of snow? By the way, today is the first official day of Spring. Two nights ago we found a neat off-road route on the internet for Southern Illinois, so that’s where we decided to go and ride for the three days off. Not only would we be escaping snow and low 30 degree temps, but we would be riding in 60 degree temps down south.

So we were set, the only thing we needed to find was a camp site. Then this morning I catch the bad news on TV. Parts of Kentucky, Illinois and Missouri and a few other states are experiencing flooding right now.

I guess this is not the best weekend to be riding this route that we have, since it takes us through the Shawnee National Forest and we’re going to riding from the Ohio River to Mississippi River. Parts of the route are near the river and some are on the levee.

After some more searching on the internet, it sure looks like most of Southern Illinois is flooded so not sure how much of that route we’ll be able to ride, if any.

If we can’t ride in Southern Illinois we’ll have to find another place to ride, maybe in central Illinois, although I have no clue what is over there.

With most of Illinois either getting snow this weekend or flooded, who knows if we’re going to ride at all. Maybe we should just stay home and rent some movies… nah. That’s why they call it “Adventure Riding”.

  3. It turned out like getting out of town was a good decision after all. The people at work tell me it snowed here at lot on Friday and it was cold all weekend. The flooding down south wasn’t too bad and it actually made riding more interesting, when you read the ride report you’ll see why :)

I can’t wait for the warmer weather to get here. It still feels like winter here today, there is fresh snow on the ground and the overnight temps were in the mid 20’s, it was in the low 30's when I left for work.
