Colorado National Monument - Rim Rock Drive

There is one paved road that runs through the Colorado National Monument. It begins south of Grand Junction - just 4 miles from the town center. This city street crosses the Colorado River, passes the entrance gate and becomes steep and twisting as it rounds many 15 mph corners and travels through one tunnel, and past red cliffs.

This road is called the Rim Rock Drive. It follows the edge of the plateau for many miles before winding down equally steeply through two more tunnels before re-crossing the Colorado into Fruita.

The 23-mile Rim Rock Drive offers nineteen scenic overlooks as it explores the geologic history on the northern edge of the Uncompahgre Plateau.
